Dining at Uncle Jang

Hello ! My signature pursed-lips-to-show-you-my-fake-dimple-smile.

Uncle Jang Korean Restaurant recently opened a new branch at Mahkota Cheras so i decided to head over and give it a try since it's trending on foursquare and it's a hot topic among my friends. I had zero idea what is Uncle Jang and what's so special about it until i went there and i swear my jaw dropped a few feets upon seeing the menu.

Four pages on the menu only. I was like, whutttttt?!
The food choices are really limited, really really limited.

So we ordered two sets of normal version Dak Gal Bi with ramen, fried rice, cheese rice cake and sweet potato as extra dish. We also added a pork cutlet.

Just in case you are wondering what's "Dak Gal Bi", I've googled it for you,

Dak galbi, also romanized dalk galbi, is a popular Korean dish generally made by stir-
frying marinated diced chicken in a gochujang (chili pepper paste) based sauce, and
sliced cabbagesweet potatoscallionsonionsperilla leaves, and tteok (rice cake) together on a
hot plate. It is a local specialty food for the city of ChuncheonGangwon Province, where dak
galbi originates. Because of its origin, the dish is also called Chunchŏn dak galbi.

It is said that dak galbi appeared after the late 1960s as an inexpensive anju (food that is eaten
while drinking) in small taverns, on the outskirts of the city to replace the comparatively
expensive gui dishes which are grilled over charcoal. The dish has spread to Chunchŏn's main
districts, where the livestock industry thrives and offers fresh ingredients with no need for
refrigeration. There is a street known as dak galbi golmok (dak galbi alley) which has a high
concentration of dak galbi restaurants. Due to the city's northern location, it is a common
destination for conscripted soldiers on leave.

It is also a popular dish for university students who are on a low budget, as dak galbi is relatively
cheap and served in abundance. It earned the nickname "commoners' galbi" or "university student's
 galbi" back in the 1970s.

Despite the fact that its name means chicken ribs, there is no rib meat in dak galbi.

So here's two servings of Dak Gal Bi.

i know the red sauce on top looks terrifying, like those "burn-you-into-ashes-hot" type of sambal.
lolol

We ordered "normal" but it's still slightly spicy, both of my sisters drank record-breaking amount of water,
fyi, they drink very little water on daily basis, unlike me who brings 1.5litres to school everyday lolol.
The waiter told use "spicy" is very spicy, i wished to taste it but my mum told me against it.

my mum isn't a fan of food photography, but i told her that taking photos before eating is an "involuntary action".

It's like my eyes sense food, triggering nerve impulse to be sent via afferent neurone to my brain then nerve impulses are transmitted via efferent neurone again to my hands to initiate my response- snap pictures!

Let's quit being so "biology-ish" here. haha

Hi Mama Lau :)

I didn't manage to snap proper pictures of the food because the waiter dumped everything into the hot plate before i manage to react..

Complementary side dishes that comes along with our set.

They also provide cold water which are free of charge haha. How considerate!

we have the waiter to fry...is that frying? idk la. They cook the dishes for us on the hot plate in front of us

really quickly they threw in all our estra dishes and so this is the only picture i manage to capture again lol.

Rice cake is my personal favourite heh :P

there comes the pork cutlet, um, sorry dear muslims readers of mine :x

I was so afraid he might just pour everything in the plate again so i was like, stop! let me take a photo first.
Luckily he didnt pour it in but my sisters finished them almost instantly because it's not spicy lol

Oh and here's the fried rice.
Their so-called "fried rice" is actually steamed white rice, a little bit of seaweed slices and vegetable with more of their red sauce (i still hadn't firgure out what's that hmm..)  and it cost RM3 more than their steam rice.

what in the world....

i couldnt fight the urge to take mirror selfie lolol
clean toilets are of cos plus points la!

In my opinion, Uncle Jang Korean Restaurant is special in its own way. The environment is clean and tidy, the service is good and efficient. I would be lying if i say i like the taste of the food a lot but at the same time i do not dislike the food too, it's just well you know "not-my-type". However, the food is quite pricy and the choices are really limited. Somehow, it's worth trying though :)

so that pretty much sums up my dining experience with Uncle Jang :)

ps my lips are red from the spiciness haha!
Yours truly,
Sheunny.
