I guess i can call myself lucky as i managed to get a friend that i have known beforehand to be my roommie. During foundation, Xinqi & I immediately agreed on being roommies as soon as we found out we're going to MAHSA together. FYI, I've known Xinqi since nine, we were good friends in primary school so yeah. (OMG I JUST REALIZED WE'VE BEEN FRIENDS FOR 11 YEARS GIRL!) My current roommie is a friend i've known in Foundation. Since Xinqi entered a different course, i became roommies with another friend who's in the same course.
So far I've been staying with roommies of the same course. there are friends who told me they prefer to stay with people with the same course, so that they can study together. For instance, when it's exam period, your roommie will be studying too (logically la) so you won't be distracted by him/her for going out/ not studying. There are also friends who told me they prefer a roommate of a different course so they won't feel stress. I think it's all personal preference la.
Okay. Where do i start.
I think it's best if you establish a strong sense of trust with your roommate/roommates. After all you will be the one sleeping and waking up next to him/ her/ them on daily basis. You don't wanna be worrying about whether or not your roommate will be poisoning you or something (jokes! but you get the idea right)
Okay i was bs-ing. Perhaps i should make a list.
How to live in harmony with a roommate (singular because it would be easier to address that way):
1. Be considerate. To me, this is the key to a harmonious living.
Let's say you are burning the midnight oil, staying up late to study and your roommate is going to bed already. Turn off the lights in the room, use your own table lamp instead. Try to be as quiet as possible, avoid tapping your pens on the table or slamming your books. If you're listening to music, use earphones, your roommate might not share the same music taste.
2. Respect his/her privacy
Do not go through your roommate's belongings without permission. Even if you suspect you're living with a drug dealer or something, don't. Never ever pry into other people's personal space. On the side note, don't use your roommate's products (eg. skin care) without permission. Don't steal food from your roommate too aha. Ask nicely if you ever need anything.
3. Be hygienic.
Always make sure you tidy up your own space. I don't know about you but the hostel in MAHSA JUC is actually pretty tiny, so if i were to leave my belongings lying around, we probably won't have space left to walk anymore lol. One major problem (mostly for girls la) is definitely hair! You know how tons of hair fall off our scalp every day? Sweep sweep! Also, pick up the hair (that has fallen off during showering) in the shower after you take a shower. It might sounds "cringey" but girlllllll, clean up!
4. Communicate.
If you have any issues with your roommate, let's say he/ she always bring talks loudly on the phone or bring his/ her friends back to the room, and it's bothering you, talk it out. Meanwhile, if your roommate tells you about any issues he / she might be having with you, resolve! Also, you might wanna find out what time your roommate needs the toilet, especially in the morning, to prepare for class. Work out a schedule so none of you will be late for late because one of you have to wait for the toilet.
It would be better if you know your roommate beforehand, or find out who is gong to be your roommate in advance. In that way, you can discuss with him/her about the items you will bring that can be shared, for example a broom, so well, you won't have too much brooms in your hostel.
If you are lucky enough, you might not just enjoy your hostel life, you might find yourself a new best friend! If you don't get along with your roommate on the first day, don't worry yet, give it some time and work things out :)
As for what to bring to your hostel, well this will be a crazy long list if i were to state everything from toothbrush to floor mat. Let me try to state 10 items you might not have thought of:
1. Table cloth.
2. Bowl, plate, fork and spoon.
3. Extension Cords.
4. Table lamp.
5. Laundry bag.
6. Umbrella.
7. Painkillers.
8. Cellophane tape.
9. Sewing kit.
10. Iron.
Here's another list of items i find the most important:
1. Rubbish bin.
2. Food (I eat in my room quite a lot because i don't really fancy the food in the cafeteria)
3. Chargers for electronic devices
4. Kettle
5. Contact lens solution & case
LOL i swear my list cannot get more random. If you somewhat thought of every item on my list already then i guess you are good to go la HAHAHA.
I'm gonna be moving into a new hostel in two weeks time and i haven't find myself a roommate yet. I hope my future roommate will be a nice person LOL.
Dear future roommate, hi, i hope we are already friends by the time you read this haha! I'm very open to opinions, so do tell me if there's anything you have on your mind okay!
Love,
Sheunny
